USD BREAKS GROUND ON PEACE CENTER
Education Sec. Richard Riley to Give Address

The groundbreaking for the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. on the west end of the campus of the University of San Diego. USD is proud to announce that U.S. Education Sec. Richard Riley will give the keynote address.

A $25 million gift from philanthropist Joan Kroc will fund the center for scholars, students and political leaders to study, reflect and work to promote harmony and understanding among people and communities.

Her challenge in offering the gift was clear: the center must not only "teach peace, it must make peace."

To that end, the institute will engage in academic research and outreach programs to creatively promote conflict resolution, non-violence and cross-cultural respect. Activities will include lectures, classes and conferences on topics such as intercultural communications, social justice and human rights.

Overlooking Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean, the 90,000-square-foot institute will include a state-of-the-art auditorium and distance learning center, along with classrooms, faculty offices, reading areas and gardens and open space for meditation and reflection.

Work will begin early next year on the institute and completion is set for 2001.

Note to media: You are welcome to cover the groundbreaking, however other attendance is by invitation.
