Jane Mendle is an assistant professor of human development and a former professor of psychology who focuses her research on adolescence, integrating developmental psychopathology with behavior genetics, public health, evolutionary psychology and epidemiology. She comments on the groundbreaking life and career of psychologist and Cornell University graduate Dr. Joyce Brothers, who died today.

Mendle says:

“Dr. Joyce Brothers was the first to talk frankly and accurately about psychological and sexual issues in mainstream media outlets. She had a remarkable impact in the field of mental health, both because she destigmatized previously taboo topics and because her radio program and magazine columns allowed her to reach people who might otherwise not have thought or been able to access a psychologist.

“She talked openly and naturally about virtually every topic, and many of the issues she raised still hold resonance today, including sexual satisfaction, body image, grief, depression, gender bias, work-life balance and whether it is realistic for a woman to ‘have it all.’”
