Marian Wright Edelman Visits Pennsylvania on Wednesday December 12th, to give her address, "Pennsylvania Leaves No Child Behind"

Pennsylvania- Marian Wright Edelman, President and Founder of the Children's Defense Fund (CDF), will visit Pennsylvania on Wednesday, December 12th, 2001. She is coming to Pennsylvania to bring national attention to the severe disparity of educational opportunities available to poor children in Pennsylvania.

The mission of the Children's Defense Fund is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, and a Moral Start in life with the support of caring families and communities. Mrs. Edelman, a graduate of Spelman College and Yale Law School, was the first African American woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar. She has served as Director of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mrs. Edelman helped coordinate the Poor People's Campaign. She has received many honorary degrees and awards including the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Prize, the Heinz Award, and a MacArthur Foundation Prize Fellowship. In 2000, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award, and the Robert F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement.
