Former U.S. Sen. George McGovern and James T. Morris, executive director of the World Food Programme, will be featured speakers at the second McGovern Center Conference: The Hungry Child, Nov. 6 at Dakota Wesleyan University.

Ann Veneman, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, has been invited to participate as well.

McGovern is the United Nations global ambassador on hunger and is known for his work on behalf of American farmers and hungry children throughout the world. He and Robert Dole, former U.S. Senator and Republican presidential candidate, cosponsored the George McGovern-Robert Dole Global Food for Education and Child Nutrition Act of 2001.

McGovern was a long-time U.S. senator for South Dakota and the 1972 presidential candidate for the Democratic Party. He is an author, lecturer and decorated World War II hero. McGovern is an alumnus of DWU and the namesake of the McGovern Center Conference.

Morris is the executive director of the world's largest food aid organization, which last year fed 77 million people in 82 countries.

For more than 35 years, he has combined a distinguished career of business and organizational management with a personal life of public service. His career includes serving as president of the Lily Foundation and as chairman and chief executive officer of IWC Resources Corporation and Indianapolis Water Company. Morris' volunteer activities include serving on the United States Olympic Committee, the American Red Cross Board of Governors and the board of trustees of Indiana University.

In addition to these speakers, representatives of agricultural businesses, nongovernmental organizations, government and politics will discuss real-world strategies for feeding hungry children and creating the political, social and cultural climate necessary for this project. The conference will include panel discussions and workshop sessions.

The McGovern Center was established in 2001 by Dakota Wesleyan University. The center seeks to cultivate servant leadership and public service, and imparts to students and citizens the qualities of service, stewardship and leadership found in the lives of George and Eleanor McGovern. Fundraising efforts are underway to build the George and Eleanor McGovern Library on campus.
