Newswise — The McIntire School of Commerce set a new Annual Fund record in 2010-2011, raising $2,976,055. In doing so, it eclipsed the previous record of $2,640,843, set a year earlier, and surpassed its goal ($2.7 million) for the 10th straight year. Nearly 22 percent of McIntire’s alumni contributed to the fund—a marked improvement over last year’s 19 percent participation rate.

Community EffortKatie Whittier, Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Engagement, notes the significance of—and the School’s gratitude for—participation at all levels. “The School receives a wide range of gifts,” Whittier says. “It’s exciting that so many of our alumni come together in support of the School’s continued leadership in business education. I am not exaggerating when I say that absolutely every contribution is critical to McIntire’s ongoing excellence.”

Whittier also stresses the School’s gratitude to the many students, faculty, staff members, and friends who contributed to the Annual Fund. “Their extraordinary support makes a tremendous difference and demonstrates the deep sense of community so characteristic of the McIntire School of Commerce,” she says.

Investment in the FutureWhittier points out that alumni support through the Annual Fund plays a key role in securing the School’s future. “Unrestricted gifts are absolutely essential to the continued success of the School,” she says. “A gift to the Annual Fund is an investment in today’s students, and it protects and enhances the value of a McIntire degree for all of the School’s graduates.”

McIntire Dean Carl Zeithaml adds, “The support we receive through the Annual Fund is critical to ensuring that McIntire maintains its status as one of the world’s best business schools. We spend our resources on recruiting outstanding faculty and staff, developing innovative curricula, supporting students with cutting-edge technology and superb career and counseling resources, and preparing them to make an immediate and positive contribution to business and society. Generations of students have benefited, and will continue to benefit, from McIntire’s unique approach to business education.”

Says Zeithaml, “The students, faculty, and staff of the Commerce School offer our sincere appreciation to our loyal and generous friends and alumni. We look forward to working in partnership with the entire McIntire community as we continue to build the world’s best and most innovative business programs.”
