UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS TO HOST MEMORY AND THE SELF SYMPOSIUM

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The University of Arkansas department of psychology announces a special symposium to be held Nov. 10-11 on the UA campus. Entitled Memory and the Self, the event will gather nationally renowned scholars to explore the connection between notions of the self and theories of memory and to discuss how this connection is bridging the fields of social and cognitive psychology.

"Both social and cognitive psychologists are conducting research about memory and about the self. They're taking somewhat different approaches but are addressing similar issues," said Denise Beike, assistant professor of psychology. "It's time to take a more integrative look at how these issues inform each other and to open a dialogue between these two groups of researchers."

Over the course of two days, 11 scholars will present papers on topics ranging from autobiographical memory to recognition of self in higher primates. Noteworthy presenters include Daniel Povinelli of the University of Louisiana, recently featured by Discover magazine as one of the "20 Young Scientists to Watch." Additionally, Dan McAdams, director of the Northwestern University Center for the Study of Lives will discuss his research on "life narratives."

Each participant will deliver a 45-minute presentation, followed by an open discussion on the research and methodology. Subsequent to the symposium, researchers will develop their papers into chapter-length manuscripts to be included in an edited volume entitled "Memory and the Self."

Editors and reporters from the news media are invited to attend the Memory and the Self symposium. Information about travel and accommodations can be obtained from the UA Office of University Relations.
