Newswise — Jens Ohlin, professor of law at Cornell University, comments on the arrest of Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb general accused of masterminding the massacre at Srebrenica in 1995.

Ohlin says: “The arrest of Gen. Mladic, and his upcoming trial in The Hague, will solidify the historical legacy of the international tribunal. Milosevic died while in custody, Karadzic is on trial, and Mladic is caught. Regardless of the outcome or verdict, it is a significant victory for the Rule of Law that these allegations will be decided in a court of law.

“Today's capture is of more than just historical significance. The U.S. would do well to take notice that international tribunals can succeed - an important lesson to learn when our own system of prosecuting al Qaeda terrorists before domestic military commissions continues to remain bogged down a decade after 9/11.”
