NAACP President Named University of Maryland May Commencement Speaker
WHO: Kweisi Mfume, president and chief executive officer of the NAACP, will be the keynote speaker at the University of Maryland, College Park's May commencement.
Mfume, a Baltimore native, has served as president of the NAACP since 1996. He served on the Baltimore City Council for seven years and in 1986 was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. During his decade-long tenure in Congress, he chaired the Congressional Black Caucus and the full Ethics Committee on the Joint Economic Committee of the House and Senate. Mfume also was a member of the Committee on Education, the General Oversight and Investigations subcommittee, and co-sponsored the Americans with Disabilities Act.
