Newswise — Clarkson University Associate Professor of History Laura Ettinger has published a book titled Nurse-Midwifery: The Birth of a New American Profession. The book describes the occupation of the nurse-midwife beginning with its development in the 1920s and through the last century to the role it plays in health care today.

"Nurse-midwives, nurses with advanced education in midwifery, have assumed a larger role in mainstream health care than ever before, yet they are still marginalized," explains Ettinger. "Continuing changes in American attitudes about childbirth, health care, and women professionals will dictate the future status of nurse-midwives. The history of the profession suggests that they will continue to navigate in the difficult waters in a middle space between the mainstream and the margins of medicine and between the nursing profession and midwifery traditions.

Ettinger's scholarly interests include the history of medicine, women's history, and modern American history. More specifically, she is interested in the history of American nurse-midwives, the culture of childbirth, gender, the structure of American health care, and oral history. Ettinger has published five articles in various publications. Nurse-midwifery: The Birth of a New American Profession is her first book.

The book is published by Ohio State University Press. Established in 1957, the prestigious printer publishes 30 books a year, and in the past has published such notable titles as Language Files, The Centenary Edition of the Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Death of Contract, and Listen to Me Good, Journal of Higher Education, as well as the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking.
