Newswise — Biomedical science is the application of biology-based science to the practice of medicine to advance the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of human disease through collaborative research. Two new advanced degree programs designed for college graduates who want to strengthen their training and education in biomedical science have been announced by the UMDNJ-Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) and Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences (MSBS) degrees will be offered for the first time in September 2010, providing interdisciplinary training for students who wish to pursue a career in medicine, research or biotechnology.

“The master’s degree programs are tailored to students who have a solid undergraduate record but require additional coursework and guidance to achieve their goals,” said Terri Goss Kinzy, PhD, senior associate dean for the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “This degree will broaden students’ knowledge in biomedical sciences and prepare them for a career in science and medicine.”

Rigorous coursework is coupled with mentored research projects tailored to each student’s strengths and interests. Within each degree program, students are required to take a number of courses focusing on the basics of medical science such as gross anatomy, physiology and medical biochemistry. In addition, students are offered targeted electives and the ability to work with faculty mentors to round out their educational experience. Students may choose their mentors from any of the school’s 22 clinical and basic science departments, thus taking advantage of the school’s wide range of clinical, translational, and basic research expertise. For students who wish to pursue a medical degree, the program offers an accelerated acceptance option with Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Provided that certain academic standards are met, accelerated acceptance guarantees students an interview with the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School admissions committee, reduces application processing and review time and, if accepted, enables students to enter the medical school the fall semester immediately following successful completion of the MBS program.

The MBS degree can be completed in as little as one year and requires the completion of a capstone project, which involves independent study under the guidance of a mentor and the presentation of a final report in the student’s specific area of interest. The MSBS degree requires a laboratory-based research thesis at the culmination of the program which may take two to three years total to complete. Students may enter the program on either a full- or part-time basis.
