Newswise — A new distance-learning master of science degree in engineering and global operations management (EGOM) that is flexibly designed for working professionals is being offered by Clarkson University.

Developed in partnership with industry, this innovative, interdisciplinary leadership program draws courses from business, engineering and arts & sciences, and is ideal for engineers and technical managers who need to keep abreast of concepts in technology and management.

"The EGOM program is truly unique in blending the worlds of business and engineering," says Rick Otero, a senior vice president with Bank of America in Charlotte, N.C.

Farzad Mahmoodi, who oversees the graduate program, says its format offers the "flexibility to meet individual needs while focusing on teamwork, leadership, technology and global vision."

"Because it emphasizes sharing information, the diversity in participating corporations produces a truly synergistic learning experience," he adds.

Companies sponsoring participants in the Clarkson program are Alcoa, AT&T, Bank of America, Borg Warner Automotive, Carrier, Colgate-Palmolive, Cooper Cameron, Corning, Eastman Kodak, General Electric, IBM, JSC Wire & Cable, MeadWestvaco, New York Power Authority, Sprint, Stanley Works, Welch Allyn, World Kitchen, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, and Xerox.

"It's very difficult to find a quality program which offers so much flexibility to further yourself," says Rick Mendoza, an engineer with Xerox in Webster, N.Y. "The EGOM program provides practical tools needed to compete in today's challenging corporate environment."

"With Web-based courses, the program offers a variety of options to complete the degree," says Mahmoodi. For example, one can complete the entire 30-credit-hour program by taking only on-campus courses or by taking a combination of on-campus and Web-based courses. Most participants finish in three years, but it's possible to complete the program in as little as 25 months.

The on-campus portion consists of three-week summer sessions each year at Clarkson. The Web-based courses are offered during fall, spring and summer semesters. Courses are offered 12 months a year.

One outstanding feature of the EGOM program is the inclusion of seminars and modules. The seminars feature current issues and practical topics, such as: agile manufacturing, high-performance work groups, six sigma methodology, lean manufacturing, design for assembly, design for six sigma, and strategic implications of computer-integrated manufacturing systems.

Modules feature one or more sessions in an interactive learning environment on specific topics, such as: strategic management of the supply chain, activity-based costing, pricing and product analysis, lead-time reduction using rapid modeling, principle-centered leadership, sustaining innovation, and anti-trust policy and practice.
