Newswise — The University of Maryland's newly renovated Union Gallery (formerly the Parent's Association Gallery) celebrates its grand reopening with an exhibit entitled "Super Depth Mapping."

We all rely on maps. These navigational tools, in both printed and mental forms, help us find our way from one place to another. Without them we are disoriented, lost in our surroundings.

"Super Depth Mapping" examines the idea of mapping from several viewpoints and in multiple dimensions. Using the University of Maryland campus as the "site", five artists will seek to expand the activity of mapping beyond its (normal) function. The artists will create works "off-site" in one or more locations on the Maryland campus. Each artist will also have a work in the gallery that is a relic of, or a locator for, the "off-site" work.

The exhibit includes Thomas Broadbent's "Windsock Project;" David First's "Sonic Feedback Network," a sound and performance installation; Richard Humann's "Video Projection Project;" Norma Markley's "Word House Installation;" and Patricia Smith's "Psychic Map and Sand Circles."

The exhibit is free and runs from September 18 through October 31, 2003.

The Union Gallery is located on the 1st floor of the Stamp Student Union at the University of Maryland.

The Grand Opening Reception will be held September 18, 2003, 5:30pm-7pm.
