Ken Margolies, an associate at the Cornell University ILR School Worker Institute in Manhattan, discusses the New York City Council’s expected passage of a proposed law mandating sick leave for most employees.

Margolies says:

“New York has very strong business interests and a mayor who opposed the sick leave bill. That’s why advocates of the sick leave bill believe its passage in NYC will help accelerate the passage of similar bills around the country.

“Polls show the sick leave bill is favored by a large majority of New Yorkers. Besides supporting the bill as pro-family and fair to the lowest-paid workers, many New Yorkers were no doubt influenced by the thought that workers in food service who could not afford to lose a day’s pay and worked while sick was a public health issue.”
