Kicking off Ohio Wesleyan's 17th Sagan National Colloquium public affairs series on September 4 is 1997 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Jody Williams, Campaign Ambassador for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, (ICBL). Her lecture, titled "The Global Dimensions of Security" is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in OWU's Gray Chapel. As the founding coordinator of the ICBL, Williams led the crusade that resulted in the 1997 international treaty banning antipersonnel landmines. Co-author of a seminal study on the socio-economic consequences of landmine contamination, Williams continues her efforts to ban landmines, having recently traveled to Afghanistan.
The fall semester's Colloquium series' theme is "The Search for Security in an Age of Anxiety." In the wake of the terrorist attacks last fall, the search for security became the great challenge facing America and the world. During the Cold War, the threat had a clear face and took a clear form. In the 21st century, the threats have many faces and take many forms. As a result, the U.S. must now consider the diverse dimensions-- international, political, historical, economic, cultural, technological, psychological and environmental-- that security has come to encompass.
The 2002 Sagan National Colloquium (SNC) provides the opportunity to explore these many dimensions of security. Complementing this year's Colloquium theme is a dynamic assortment of guests including:
* Dr. Shirin-Tahir Kheli, director of South Asia Program at Johns Hopkins University and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights and a 1961 OWU graduate will lecture on "Human Rights and U.S. Foreign Policy in an Age of Uncertainty" on September 10 at 7:30 p.m. in OWU's Hamilton-Williams Campus Center Benes Room.
* Dr. Alan Brinkley, award-winning author, essayist and Allan Nevins Professor of History at Columbia University will discuss "The Idea of an American Century," on September 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hamilton-Williams Campus Center Benes Room.
* Stan Sloan, national security policy expert, founder of Atlantic Community Initiative, author and Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow will lecture on "A New American Empire?: The U.S. and the War on Terrorism," on September 24 at 7:30 p.m. in OWU's Hamilton-Williams Campus Center.
* Russell Banks, award-winning prolific author with titles that include "The Sweet Hereafter," "Affliction," "Continental Drift," and "Rule of the Bone," (all of which have been or are being made into films) will speak on "Living in the Sweet Hereafter" on September 30 at 8 p.m. in OWU's Gray Chapel. Banks also is OWU's Carpenter Lecturer during fall semester.
* Byron Pitts, CBS News Correspondent serving as primary correspondent at Ground Zero and reporting from Afghanistan will discuss "The Role of the Media in Times of Conflict," on October 10 at 7:30 p.m. in OWU's Hamilton- Williams Campus Center Benes Room. Pitts is a 1982 OWU alumnus.
* Dr. Jeffrey Rosen, legal affairs editor of "The New Republic," and associate professor at the George Washington University Law School, and author of "The Unwanted Gaze: The Destruction of Privacy in America," will answer the question,"The Silver Bullet: Can Technology Protect Liberty and Security at the Same Time?" on October 15 at 7:30 p.m.in OWU's Hamilton- Williams Campus Center Benes Room.
* Dr. Trudy Govier, philosopher, author of "Forgiveness and Revenge" and "A Delicate Balance: Thinking in Times of Terror," peace education and civil society activist will lecture on "Responsibility, Power and Terror" on October 23 at 7:30 p.m. in OWU's R.W. Corns Building's Bigelow Room.
* Dr. Jamie Shea, NATO Director of Information and Press and one of the world's premier international security experts and scholars will speak about "Winning the War on Terrorism," on October 29 at 7:30 p.m. in OWU's Hamilton-Williams Campus Center.
* Dr. Nancy Connell, Director of University Medicine and Dentistry of the New Jersey Center for BioDefense and Associate Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics will lecture on "Biological Warfare: Weapons and Threats," on October 30 at 7:30 p.m. in OWU's Hamilton-Williams Campus Center Benes Room.
* Dr. Jamie Shea, NATO Director of Information and Press, Dr. Lawrence Kaplan, diplomatic historian with Georgetown University, and Dr. SeanKay, chair of Ohio Wesleyan University's International Studies Program will discuss "Does NATO Have a Role in 21st Century Security?" at noon on October 31 in OWU's Hamilton-Williams Campus Center Benes Room.
* Claudia Stevens, performer and playwright, will perform as pianist/singer/actor in "A Table Before Me," a musical one-act she created, conveying the terror and turmoil experienced by her mother's family during the Nazi takeover of Austria in 1938, at 8 p.m. on November 12 in OWU's Chappelear Drama Center. This event is co-sponsored with OWU's Performing Arts Series and admission is $15 adults, $5 students.
* Dr. Fritz Graf, foremost authority on Greek and Roman religion and co- director of the Ohio State University Center for Epigraphy and Paleography will lecture on "A Gate is Just a Hole in the Wall: The Quest for High Security in Ancient Cities," on November 20 at 7:30 p.m. in OWU's Hamilton- Williams Campus Center Benes Room.
