HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY TO HOST RETROSPECTIVE ON THE WORK OF ROBERT ANDERSON

Featuring Anderson, Edward Albee, A.R. Gurney, George Grizzard, Eileen Heckert, Teresa Wright and John Kerr; October 26 and 27, 2000

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY ... The Hofstra University Cultural Center will host an in-depth retrospective on the work of author Robert Anderson, best known for Tea and Sympathy, on October 26 and 27, 2000. Anderson’s other works include I Never Sang for My Father and A Nun’s Story. The conference will not only feature the active participation of Anderson but a number of famous playwrights, authors and actors, including Edward Albee (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), A.R. Gurney (Love Letters, The Dining Room), Donald Margulies (Sight Unseen, Dinner with Friends) and actors George Grizzard, Eileen Heckert, Teresa Wright and John Kerr.

The keynote address for the event, titled “The Shape and Shadow of Love: The Core Drama of Robert Anderson,” will be given by Donald Spoto, biographer of Alfred Hitchcock, Tennessee Williams, Ingrid Bergman and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Discussions throughout the two-day event will focus on the translation of Anderson’s work to the stage and screen. Panels include: “Robert Anderson, Fellow Playwright;” “Acting in a Robert Anderson Play;” and “Films of Robert Anderson.”

There will also be a full presentation of Anderson’s You Know I Can’t Hear You When the Water’s Running by Hofstra USA Productions and a staged reading of Free and Clear.

The Hofstra Cultural Center is known internationally for coordinating in-depth conferences and symposia on a variety of topics that draw scholars, artists and celebrities from across the globe. Recent events include a two-day conference on Margaret Thatcher (which Lady Thatcher attended); a day-long symposia on Alfred Hitchcock featuring Tippi Hedren and Teresa Wright; an interdisciplinary conference on Frank Sinatra, which featured the participation of Tina Sinatra and Quincy Jones; and a series of conferences on the presidential administrations from Roosevelt through Bush. Those conferences were highlighted by the appearances by former presidents (Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and George Bush); first ladies; cabinet members and world leaders.
