Prominent Sociologist to Lecture at UIC

WHAT: John Stanfield II, international educator, author and researcher, will deliver the eighth annual Karen Honig Memorial Lecture. This lecture is presented by the Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Stanfield's lecture is titled "Throw Away Population and the Socially Responsible University." His talk will focus on finding ways to utilize academic institutional resources to empower impoverished communities.

WHEN: Tuesday, April 16, 4-6 p.m.

WHERE: UIC Chicago Circle Center, Cardinal Room, 750 S. Halsted St.

DETAILS: The lecture honors the memory of Karen Honig and her commitment to inner-city children and their families. Honig was "an outstanding social-work practitioner and graduate of the college," said Creasie Finney Hairston, dean of the Jane Addams College of Social Work at UIC.

Distinguished scholars who have made significant contributions to improving social services for poor children, youth and families are invited to speak at the annual event, according to Hairston.

Stanfield, the Avalon professor of sociology and director of the Morehouse Research Institute at Morehouse College in Atlanta, is well known for his in-depth studies of urban universities and nonaffluent communities, comparative studies of the sociology of racism and antiracism, and civic engagement in plural communities and societies.

"Professor Stanfield is an educator, author and researcher who has received numerous awards for his academic and community work, positioning him as a noteworthy scholar to speak at such a momentous event," said Hairston.

A reception follows the lecture.
