Psychoanalysis in China: An International Exchange

New York, NY- Dr. Qin Wei of the Chengdu Psychoanalytic Centre affiliated with the Sichuan Provincial Association of Philosophy in Sichuan, China, will present a series of lectures on psychoanalysis in China, to be held in New York City on Tuesday, April 23 and Wednesday, May 8, and in New Haven, CT on Thursday, April 25 (see below). All events are free and open to the public, and offer a unique opportunity to learn more about the history and practice of psychoanalysis in China from one of that nation's first trained psychoanalytic clinicians.

Psychoanalysis has enjoyed a resurgence of interest in China in the past two decades. While attracting the attention of literary theorists and critics as far back as the 1920s, a turbulent history of war and revolution prevented the establishment of professional psychoanalytic institutions until relatively recently.

Since that time, however, China has been host to a number of important international symposia and conferences, and in 1999 the Chengdu Psychoanalytic Centre became the first-ever institution to offer clinical psychoanalytic training in China. Sichuan University has been granted permission by the Education Ministry to offer a Master's degree program in psychoanalytic studies (non-clinical). The university has also applied to the Education Ministry to begin a full psychoanalytic training institute in Chengdu.

In his lectures, Dr. Qin will address the history of the Chinese psychoanalytic movement and touch on some of the implications raised by this resurgence: relations between psychoanalysis and the changing social, economic, and political face of China, and the issue of cultural difference. Psychoanalysis' scientific status becomes a complex question when seen from the perspective of a society with markedly different assumptions about personhood and the self.

Dr. Qin is vice-director of the Chendgu Centre for Psychoanalysis, and is affiliated with the Sichuan University Institute of Psychology. His publications include translations of works by Lacan and Mary Klages, "Content Analysis of Tibetan Literature," and a presentation on "The Double Wishes of Mother and The Self Image of Child." In addition to his psychological qualifications, Dr. Qin holds a Masters Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
