WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 12, 5:00 P.M. PDT WHERE: San Diego Convention Center, 111 West Harbor Drive, San Diego, Calif. 92101, Upper Level, Ballroom 20ABCD.

BACKGROUND: For more than 35 years, Mrs. Carter has been a fervent advocate for people with mental illnesses. She believes that our nation’s health care system treats people with these conditions like second-class citizens – particularly children, the elderly, the poor, those affected by trauma and those trapped in the criminal justice system. In her book, “Within Our Reach,” Mrs. Carter outlines how to end discrimination against these underserved groups. The American Psychological Association, in Washington, D.C., is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States and is the world's largest association of psychologists. APA's membership includes more than 152,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students. Through its divisions in 54 subfields of psychology and affiliations with 60 state, territorial and Canadian provincial associations, APA works to advance psychology as a science, as a profession and as a means of promoting health, education and human welfare.
