WHO: Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter
WHAT: APA will honor Mrs. Carter with a presidential citation during the opening session of the American Psychological Association’s 118th Annual Convention. Mrs. Carter plans to discuss the challenges of caregiving for people with mental illnesses, inadequacies in the health care system regarding treatment and services and the need to destigmatize mental illness, as chronicled in her new book “Within Our Reach.” Mrs. Carter will also be available to sign copies of her book afterward.

BACKGROUND: For more than 35 years, Mrs. Carter has been a fervent advocate for people with mental illnesses. She believes that our nation’s health care system treats people with these conditions like second-class citizens – particularly children, the elderly, the poor, those affected by trauma and those trapped in the criminal justice system. In her book, “Within Our Reach,” Mrs. Carter outlines how to end discrimination against these underserved groups. The American Psychological Association, in Washington, D.C., is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States and is the world's largest association of psychologists.
