Newswise — Rowan University will kick off a year of events marking the 40th anniversary of the Hollybush Summit with an open house on Sunday, June 24, from noon until 4 p.m., at Hollybush Mansion, on Whitney Avenue on the Glassboro, N.J. campus.

The celebration is open to the public and will include tours of the recently restored mansion, a chance to speak with Summit observers and Rowan faculty and an opportunity for visitors to videotape their memories of the Summit and become a part of Hollybush history.

On June 23 and 25, 1967, U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson and Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin met face to face for an historic summit at then-Glassboro State College to discuss the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War, which found them on opposing sides, and other world issues.

Thsse were tense times for the United States, for the Soviet Union and for the world. And while Johnson and Kosygin signed no formal agreement, they did acknowledge that the Hollybush Summit was successful, and the summit helped start to ease some Cold War tensions. The president dubbed the promise of good future relations "the Spirit of Hollybush."

Rowan plans to hold a series of nearly a dozen events throughout the anniversary year that focus on issues that faced the world then and face it now, including a symposium on nuclear nonproliferation in mid-spring 2008 and lectures and special activities sponsored by several University departments.

The June 24 open house is free, and no reservations are required. Parking will be available on campus.
