Science Writing Workshop Covers Skills and Issues

MOSCOW, Idaho -- The University of Idaho and Society of Environmental Journalists will draw working journalists and scientists together Nov. 6 and 7 to consider some of the leading issues challenging the Northwest and the nation. The goal is to help journalists sharpen their skills in covering issues and public policies that rely on the scientific method.

Pulitzer Prize winner and keynote speaker William Dietrich will address science writing and the public's need for reliable information from journalists during a dinner Nov. 6. American Fisheries Society President Christine Moffitt, a UI research associate professor of fish and wildlife, will join a panel on the science of salmon survival. Beverly Cook, the U.S. Department of Energy's Idaho Operations Office manager based at Idaho Falls, is also scheduled to attend. She oversees the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory.

Other panels will address topics including, Developing the Science Story, Should We Cover Science Like Politics?, Biotechnology, Computer Security, Groundwater Protection, and Covering Nuclear Issues.

Faculty and staff members from the University of Idaho, Washington State University and University of Washington, and state and federal agencies will also offer their views. Top staff members from Northwest daily newspapers will participate in panel discussions during the two-day workshop.

The registration fee, including a ticket to Saturday's dinner, will be $30 for journalists or $75 for others, until Nov. 1. A $10 late registration fee will be added after that date.
