Newswise — Every year there is a breakthrough in high-end gadgets for your home, and this year that breakthrough is found in 3-D Televisions and all of the toys that come with it. With Fios releasing 10 3-D movies in time for the holiday season, the mad rush will be to purchase a 3-D television. Or will it?

First launched earlier this year, now a wide range of first generation 3-D televisions will be available in time to make everyone’s holiday wish list. Although having a great HDTV allows for a brighter, better picture, 3-D allows for landscapes to develop in front of you, and explosions that make you jump.

Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone 3-D expert and founder of ARB Labs, Adrian Bulzacki chimes in on whether or not now is the right time to buy: “In the past it’s been a fad, but right now at least the content is being developed. Currently it’s less about the TV and more about the Blu-ray player that can be 3-D.

“It won’t yet be as good as it looks in the theatre,” he cautions. “With home entertainment, TV companies sometimes cut corners and the audience may have to sit directly facing the centre of the TV screen to get the effect.”

If you do decide to buy a 3-D TV this year for the early adopter on your list, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

1. Ensure the content availability suits your needs: Are you looking for 3-D Games, 3-D movies, Blu–ray, etc.

2. Make sure the room size and set-up are compatible for the 3-D television you choose, i.e., be aware that to have the 3-D effect all audience members must be able to sit right in front of the screen (not on an angle).

3. Consider your budget: For a more affordable 3-D television, the important thing is an active shutter display. For more high-end systems consider the polarized 3-D projector.

4. Look at what other technologies / name brands you already have. Staying consistent with brands can help you stay consistent with technology. For example, if you have a Sony PlayStation, look into Sony’s 3-D television offerings.

5. Remember you are purchasing the first generation of this technology, so make sure you do your research. Buy smart this holiday season. For the cost of having the latest television, you’ll want to ensure you are able to use it to its full capacity.
