Newswise — "While the transition to college can be difficult for any student, those with learning and behavioral challenges can be especially at risk for difficulties when adjusting to the college environment," says Tara McKee, clinical psychologist and associate professor of psychology at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.

McKee's research and clinical experience suggest that a variety of strategies can be helpful for these students when it comes to this transition including: "¢ teaching students self-advocacy skills"¢ meeting early and often with the college's administrator in charge of disability services"¢ explicitly teaching organizational and study skills"¢ creating opportunities for peer support.

McKee earned a Ph.D. and master's degree in clinical psychology from the University of Connecticut. Her clinical work has focused on children in school settings and in-patient hospital settings. Her research focuses on families coping with children with varying challenges such as developmental disabilities and behavior disorders as well as the impact of behavioral disorders on the transition to college. McKee is author or co-author of numerous papers published in Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, Applied Social Psychology, Behaviour Research and Therapy, Journal of Attention Disorders, and Journal of the American Medical Association and has made several invited presentations.
