SMU ANNOUNCES SPEAKERS FOR 2000-2001 TATE LECTURE SERIES

DALLAS (SMU) -- Legendary anchorman Walter Cronkite, award-winning actress Julie Andrews, and underwater explorer Robert Ballard will be among the speakers for the 2000-2001 season of Southern Methodist University's Willis M. Tate Distinguished Lecture Series.

The season begins Thursday, Sept. 14 with The Linda and Mitch Hart Lecture featuring a panel moderated by David Gergen, editor-at-large of US News and World Report. Panelists will include Bill Kristol, editor and publisher of The Weekly Standard, and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bill Moyers.

2000-2001 will be the 19th season for the Tate Lecture Series, which has become an integral part of the cultural and intellectual life of Dallas.

"We are looking forward to another exciting series of lectures from a diverse lineup of speakers," said John L. Adams, chair of the Tate Lecture Series Board of Directors.

The Tate Lecture Series is presented by The Dallas Morning News and sponsored by WFAA-TV (Channel 8), BIG 570 and American Airlines. Supporters are Buick, Judy Blackman Floral Design, Inc., Cencor Realty Services, The Mansion on Turtle Creek, SMU Student Foundation, Vectrix.com and The Weitzman Group.

"We are especially grateful for the sponsors, supporters and patrons who make the series possible," said Jeanne P. Whitman, SMU's Vice President for Development and External Affairs. Whitman noted that proceeds from the series help provide full scholarships for more than 40 President's Scholars at SMU.
