School of Social Work Professor, Student Selected For Top Peer Honors

The National Association of Social Workers, Maryland Chapter, has selected Gust Mitchell, DSW, at the University of Maryland as Social Worker Educator of the Year. It has also selected Pamela College, a second year MSW student at the School of Social Work, as the Social Work Student of the Year. The chapter plans to honor them at a March 30 luncheon at the Maritime Technical Institute in Linthicum Heights.

The Chapter also has planned a one-day conference titled "Social Work Families and the Courts" around the awards luncheon. The aim of the conference is to educate social workers regarding their expanding roles in the court system.

Mitchell, an associate professor and associate dean of the BSW program who received his MSW degree from the University of Tennessee in 1966, was nominated unanimously by the faculty of the baccalaureate program at the School of Social Work. He began his academic career as a field instructor. Within two years, he was assigned a tenure-track position teaching professional practice in the master's program. He completed a Doctorate of Social Work at Catholic University of America in 1975.

Among his accomplishments are the development of the social work program at Coppin State University and the inclusion of case managers in the state Center for Health Program Development. In addition, he founded the Center of Research and Teaching in Social Work at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) campus and served as its director for the first five years.

With a background in business, College came to study social work with the idea of using her managerial and analytical skills to help the needy. She is an advocate and volunteer for organizations such as Crisis Intervention Program and the Homecorps Americorps where she served as a homeless outreach worker in the Human Services Programs of Carroll County, Inc. Also, she has served as an annual statewide conference planning committee member for the Center for Poverty Solutions and on the client advisory board of Moveable Feast, Inc.

During her first year as an MSW student, Pam College served her practicum placement at the Baltimore Urban League where she provided innovative approached to service delivery. In addition, College holds a special interest in legislative issues. Since August 1999, she has served as an advocate for constituent concerns related to federal issues in Barbara Mikulski's state and DC offices.

In addition to her academic load, College has held leadership positions in the Student Government Association and in the Gay and Lesbian Student Organization. Moreover, she is a member of the Graduation 2000 Planning Committee.

According to the NASW-MD chapter newsletter, "College exemplifies the qualities of a mature student informed by a characteristic enthusiasm for her chosen profession."
