HOFSTRA CLASS TO TAKE A CROSS-CONTINENTAL TRIP FOR A FIRST-HAND STUDY OF AMERICA AND CANADA AT THE THRESHOLD OF THE 21ST CENTURY

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY ... On Thursday, October 28, Hofstra University students enrolled in the class "An American Odyssey" will embark on a trip throughout America and Canada for a unique examination of the countries at the turn of the century. Before their return on December 18, the students and their professor will have visited more than 30 cities, met with historians from different regions, read books and textbooks relevant to the regions they visited, talked to people from all over the country and explored famous museums, libraries and landmarks.

This is the fourth time Hofstra's New College has offered the American Odyssey class, which was held for the first time in 1992. According to Linda Longmire, the New College professor who will lead this year's class, the goal of the American Odyssey is "... not only to teach students about North America -- the good, the bad, the ugly, the beautiful -- as it approaches the 21st century and the next millennium. The trip is also a journey of self-discovery in which students learn about other people and themselves.

"They develop skills -- cooperation, conflict resolution and creative problem solving -- that are so vital to individual and collective survival. They do not return the as the same person who began the Odyssey."

This year's American Odyssey is the first to spend an extended amount of time in Canada and also to retrace the Civil Rights movement in the South. Their itinerary also includes stopovers in Alabama, Mississippi, New Mexico, Arizona (the Grand Canyon) and in cities such as Boston, Detroit, Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, New Orleans, San Antonio, Austin, Oklahoma City (where they will spend Thanksgiving), Las Vegas, Palm Springs, San Diego, Hollywood, San Francisco, San Jose, Oregon, Salt Lake City, Denver and St. Louis. Additionally, they will stop at the World Trade Organization Summit in Seattle for a better understanding of the global economy.
