Newswise — Teachers looking for a "hands-on" workshop to help them explain novelist William Faulkner's works to their students are encouraged to attend at least two sessions at this year's Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference at the University of Mississippi.

Teaching Faulkner, offered July 25 and July 29 at 8:30-10 a.m. both days, is a professional development seminar aimed at teachers who wish to encourage literary understanding of the Nobel laureate. The university's 31st annual conference, July 25-29, examines Faulkner and Material Culture, with lectures and discussions by literary scholars and critics.

Before July 1, the conference registration fee is $150 for students, $250 for Friends of the Center and $275 for all other participants. The fee does not cover lodging, optional tours and meals. Fees increase by $25 after July 1. Teachers who want to attend the Teaching Faulkner workshops must register for the full conference; only students can register for single sessions.

On-site registration July 25 begins at 10 a.m. at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts at 100 University Ave., with the opening program at 1 p.m. Beginning Monday, all lectures are held in Johnson Commons ballroom.

The conference examines how the materiality of life " homes, clothes, transportation, work, sports, food, drink, etc. " is woven into Faulkner's work.

"None of them is 'natural'; all are constructs that reflect desires, choices, social attitudes, moral values," said Donald Kartiganer, UM professor of English and holder of the Howry Chair in Faulkner Studies.

Teaching Faulkner session leaders are James Carothers of the University of Kansas, Terrell Tebbets of Lyon College (Arkansas), Charles Peek of the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Theresa M. Towner of the University of Texas at Dallas.

Registration forms and more information are available at the Office of Outreach and Continuing Education or on the Internet at http://www.outreach.olemiss.edu/events/faulkner/.
