Newswise — Texas is the first state to officially recognize Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses Day, which The Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) established as September 8, 2010.

On June 28, Governor Rick Perry officially recognized Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses Day saying, “As pediatric hematology and oncology nurses, you help protect our state’s most precious resource – our children. You put your experience and training into action, helping young Texans overcome cancer and blood disorders and grow into healthy, successful adults. I know these children, and their loved ones, are eternally grateful. You are true Texan heroes, and I thank you for your hard work and dedication.”

According to APHON President Deb Echtenkamp of Dallas, pediatric hematology/oncology nurses are constantly striving to learn best practices, contribute to and advance the field of knowledge, and share the vision of a cancer and blood disorder free-future.

“Each day, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses care for children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and blood disorders,” Echtenkamp said. “These special nurses are dedicated to providing the highest standard of care to their patients and families. Often, that care extends beyond their physical health, to include emotional support and long term follow-up treatment as they mature into adults.”
