Newswise — Mel Gibson's highly anticipated and controversial film "The Passion of the Christ" opened yesterday - Ash Wednesday.

Saint Louis University theologian Mike McClymond, Ph.D., has seen the movie and is available to offer his reaction to the film.

The University's Steber Professor of Theological Studies, McClymond has written the forthcoming book "Familiar Stranger: An Introduction to Jesus of Nazareth."

The book devotes an entire chapter to the final week of Jesus' life. McClymond can put the movie into context, discussing the events that lead up to Christ's suffering and crucifixion.

McClymond also can discuss how Jesus Christ has been portrayed and interpreted historically.

"I would argue that liberals and conservatives have both presented images of Jesus that distort and limit the figure presented in the New Testament Gospels," he said.
