Newswise — Transitioning to college is a major step for students and their parents, but it doesn't have to be painful, according to George Brelsford, associate vice president for Student Affairs at Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ, and father of two college graduates.

Brelsford, who has spent 26 years in higher education, offers some basic tips for making the move from high school to college for students and their parents:

"¢ Talk to your roommate first to agree on who will bring what. No dorm or residence hall room really needs two mini-refrigerators or CD players."¢ Try to get a look at the room; it will help you plan for everything from the correct sheets to those little extras that will turn a room into your home for a year."¢ Remember you can purchase necessities students need in most college towns now, so there is no need to lug everything from home."¢ Students are not going in the North Pole. They are going to school, and they don't need survival tools or rations."¢ Know the rules. Don't move in with things you are not permitted to have."¢ Parents: don't linger. Move your children in, buy a couple of college logo tee-shirts and head home. The best thing that can happen is your child starts bonding immediately with the college and his or her peers.
