Newswise — A class next fall at the University of Iowa College of Law will examine the recently passed health care reform law, and the instructor says the syllabus won’t lack for material.
“The law is mammoth, more than 2,000 pages long, so we’ll have plenty to study,” said Herbert Hovenkamp, professor of law. “If anything, we’ll have a hard time fitting it into a semester.”
The colloquium style class will meet weekly through the semester and is offered by the law school’s Innovation, Business and Law Center. Hovenkamp, one of the center’s faculty members, said the class will analyze legal issues presented by the country’s new health care policy. Given its sweeping nature, he said the issues are many and broad.
“It touches virtually every aspect of the law that we can think of,” he said. “Almost every law college graduate who practices in an area with a significant regulatory component can benefit from learning about the health care reform law.”
Other legal areas the new health are plan impacts are economics, human rights, anti-trust, insurance, employment, poverty and constitutional.
“And there are others I’m not thinking about right now,” he said. “It has the potential to cut across a lot of different specialties.”
To accommodate that broad scope, Hovenkamp said professors and experts from across the UI campus and beyond will help teach the multi-disciplinary class. Instructors will include Hovenkamp, an anti-trust expert, and UI health care law experts Josephine Gittler and Sheldon Kurtz.
The primary instructor will be David Ortenlicher, a professor and public health law expert who is visiting at UI next year from the Indiana University law school in Indianapolis.
Other instructors might come from the UI College of Public Health or Carver College of Medicine, Hovenkamp said.
The Innovation, Business and Law Center is an interdisciplinary teaching and research venture in the College of Law that brings together a faculty who teach and study problems of business, technology, innovation, regulation and legal policy. The center offers an innovative curriculum and outstanding legal training in government regulation of entrepreneurship, innovation, and management of resources, and it encourages collaborative interdisciplinary research in those areas.
