UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND BALTIMORE RECEIVES 1.6 MILLION DOLLAR GIFT FROM LEGENDARY GOLFER AND PHILANTHROPIST

The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and School of Medicine will share a $1.6 million gift from the estate of Evelyn Grollman Glick, the Baltimore philanthropist and golf champion who died last year at the age of 87.

The School of Pharmacy will receive $844,000 to provide additional funding for the Ellis Grollman Lectures in the Pharmaceutical Sciences, named for a brother who graduated from the School. Created in 1983, the lecture fund has supported visits to campus by many national and international figures in the pharmaceutical or basic sciences.

David A. Knapp, PhD, Dean of the School of Pharmacy, acknowledged the gift as a "major opportunity to enhance and expand the Grollman lecture series to enrich the education of our professional and graduate students, and to enable our faculty to interact with the best scientific minds in the world."

The School of Medicine will receive $750,000 to establish the Evelyn Glick Faculty Enrichment Fund in Basic Sciences, and provide additional funding for the Dr. Aaron I. Grollman Visiting Professorship, named for another brother who graduated from University of Maryland School of Medicine.

"Mrs. Glick's generous donation enables us to continue our mission of offering the highest quality education to our students by providing them with outstanding educators," says Donald E. Wilson, MD, MACP, vice president for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine.

A Baltimore native who grew up in the Druid Hill neighborhood, Evelyn Grollman married Baltimore attorney and golfer Maurice Glick in the 1930's. She started playing golf in 1940 at the age of 30, and went on to become one of the most dominant female players of her time. Mrs. Glick won dozens of amateur titles and competed in the Ladies Professional Golf Association.

As longtime benefactors of the University of Maryland, the Grollman family has made numerous donations to the Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine. A nephew, Arthur P. Grollman, MD, is adjunct professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
