Newswise — BOULDER – The University of Denver (DU), in conjunction with the University of Colorado, will host the 5th Annual Political Networks Conference & Workshops at the Wolf Law Building on the Boulder campus. The four-day event will run from June 13-16 with training scheduled the first two days and a conference with discussion panels the following two days.

The conference this year will offer presentations on regarding network analysis from educators across the country regarding research on social networks and their influence on the social sciences.

“We’ve sought a wide range of research from political science, sociology, education, criminology, mathematics and other disciplines that are embracing the use of network analysis,” says Seth Masket, associate professor of political science at DU and co-host for the conference. “Scholars across different disciplines find value in seeing how these methods are used and learn how to adapt them to their own research.”

Since social networking is still relatively new, many of its potential uses remain untapped. Masket hopes that through events such as these, peers can learn from one another to develop best use practices that will generate dramatic results.

“Social network research is not yet widely taught in graduate or undergraduate programs. This conference offers two days of training, providing novices and experienced practitioners with an opportunity to learn some new techniques from some of the leaders in the field,” Masket says. “It also provides a chance for scholars to meet with others using similar methods, share ideas and gain feedback on research that is already in progress.”

Over the past five years, the conference has grown drastically from just a handful of scholars to more than 250 dues-paying members. In addition to funding from the host institutions, it is also sponsored by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
