Colgate University and Zogby International to announce results of first-ever poll of Upstate New York voters

Hamilton, NY --The results from the preliminary Colgate University/Zogby International Upstate NY Poll will be announced at a press conference in Merrill House at Colgate University on Tuesday, April 25 at 10:00 a.m. For directions to Merrill House and parking information, please call 315-228-7417

The Colgate University/Zogby International Upstate NY Poll is the first of its kind to gather Upstate New Yorkers' opinions on a variety of topics, including work, quality of life, politics, the economy, government, and the Big Apple itself. The initial results will provide insight to how voters--who live in the area that runs from Buffalo to Albany and from Plattsburgh to Poughkeepsie--feel about candidates running for President, State Senate, as well as their views on the region's economic health.

It was a natural connection for the two upstate New York institutions to come together and share their expertise on this project. "Upstate both sustains a quality of life and confronts issues that make it ripe for study," said John Zogby, president of the Utica-based firm that has earned an international reputation for its social, political and economic research. "In population alone it represents more than 40 percent of the state's population -- a population greater than all but seven of U.S. states."

Jane Pinchin, Colgate's dean of faculty and provost, said, "As upstate New Yorkers we appreciate the richness and diversity in a region of the state, and indeed the country, that sometimes goes unrecognized. We were drawn to this study because it offers the fascinating prospect of teaching us more about ourselves at the same time that it shines a light on the wonderfully complex mix that is upstate New York."

Both John Zogby and Jane Pinchin will be present at the press conference.

The surveys, done by telephone from the Utica headquarters of Zogby International, reflect the opinions of 1,000 randomly selected upstate New Yorkers. Results of the poll have been cross-tabulated with other information in the Zogby database to provide a detailed view of upstate.
