The Leadership Difference: Rating the Presidents

October 11, 2000

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY ... Who have been America's most effective presidents? This is a question that has been debated intensely throughout the country's history. In an effort to bring us closer to an answer, the Cultural Center and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Hofstra University will present "The Leadership Difference: Rating the Presidents" on Wednesday, October 11, 2000. This one-day symposium will feature in depth discussions by scholars from around the country who will evaluate presidential performance and reputation.

Since the early 1980s Hofstra University, located in Hempstead, Long Island, has organized conferences on modern American presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt through George Bush. These conferences have attracted the participation of former presidents (including Ford, Carter and Bush), first ladies, cabinet members, world leaders, scholars and high-profile print and television journalists.

"The Leadership Difference" will continue the tradition of the Presidential Conference series with a more overarching analysis of the presidency. The symposium will focus on the following topics:

* Rating the Presidents: Purpose, Criteria, Consequences* How Does the Public Evaluate the Presidents?* How Does Political Partisanship Influence Presidential Ratings?

Confirmed participants include: Professor Tim H. Blessing, Alvernia College; Professor Douglas G. Brinkley, University of New Orleans; Professor James MacGregor Burns, Williams College; Professor George C. Edwards III, Texas A&M University; Dr. Alvin S. Felzenberg, The Heritage Foundation; Professor Fred I. Greenstein, Princeton University; Professor Martha Joynt Kumar, Towson University; Professor James P.
