Newswise — Margaret Fitzpatrick, MD, an infectious diseases physician who specializes in public health, has joined Loyola University Health System.

Dr. Fitzpatrick is board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases.

She earned her medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. She completed her residency and fellowship in infectious disease at Northwestern Memorial Hospital McGaw Medical Center, Chicago.

Dr. Fitzpatrick also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences from the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind. She also earned a Master of Science in clinical investigation from Northwestern University, Chicago.

Her professional memberships include the American College of Physicians and Infectious Diseases Society of America.

“Loyola is a world leader in identifying, preventing and fighting infectious disease and I am pleased to join the department,” said Dr. Fitzpatrick, an assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. “These are challenging times in infectious disease with threats of Ebola and recurrence of measles and whooping cough. I look forward to working with my esteemed colleagues at Loyola on these public health concerns through research and advanced patient care.”

Loyola University Health System is recognized internationally as a leader in infection control and prevention. Loyola is one of the few hospitals that invest in universal screening of all inpatients for MRSA. Loyola was one of the first institutions to require all staff to have mandatory flu shots as a condition of employment. Loyola was the only academic hospital to participate in a national C. difficile study and performs the most accurate testing for bacteria. Loyola also actively screens Emergency Department patients for HIV/AIDS as part of an ongoing research study.
