Rutgers scholar Hooshang Amirahmadi is available to comment on the latest developments in tensions between the United States and Iran and the new sanctions ordered by the Trump administration.

Amirahmadi is an expert on Iranian affairs at the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy and a former Iranian presidential candidate.

“U.S. sanctioning of Iran's supreme leader is unprecedented,” he said. “Sanctioning Iran's Foreign Minister will be equally unprecedented. These sanctions signal the end of diplomacy between the two governments. The only alternatives left moving forward are more crippling U.S. sanctions against Iran and ultimately a war. This is a disastrous course for both nations."

Amirahmadi is the founder and president of the American-Iranian council and was a candidate in Iran’s 2005, 2013 and 2017 presidential elections. He is a former director of Rutgers University–New Brunswick’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies and the author of Revolution and Economic Transition: The Iranian Experience.
