Rutgers Expert Available to Discuss White Supremacist Ideas in Political Discourse

New Brunswick, N.J. (July 24, 2019) – Rutgers scholar Khadijah Costley White, an expert on social justice, race, gender, politics and power, is available to discuss racist and white supremacist ideas in political discourse.

"White supremacy is able to dominate modern political discourse because the media, both in popular culture and in news, fails to address racism as a structural issue rather than a character flaw or personal quality,” White said. “This means that the news media creates a false equivalence between people who are critical of racism and people who oppose it, suggesting that they each offer valuable insights and contributions. This pattern is even worse when white supremacists hold the reins of power. The media bolster their viewpoints as legitimate and important, as we see in Trump's presidency.”

White, an associate professor in Rutgers University–New Brunswick’s School of Communications and Information, is the author of Branding Right-Wing Activism: The News Media and the Tea Party.
