WHAT: Digital media leaders from Wired, Pixar, and Mozilla will discuss whether the web is dead and apps are king, or tablets are the new, new thing at this year’s 6th annual >play, the Berkeley Digital Media Conference at the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. Themed “>play it fwd,” the one-day, MBA student-run event is expected to draw more than 500 industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and students to explore the most important trends in digital media and cast predictions for the future.

WHO:‧ Chris Anderson, Wired Magazine Editor-in-Chief and bestselling technology author, on the role of the iPad and other tablets in the future of media (morning keynote). ‧ Dr. Michael B. Johnson, Moving Pictures Group Lead at Pixar Animation Studios, on how Pixar manages the movie-making process while keeping its eye on the big prize – a compelling story, well told. (afternoon keynote)

Panels:Panel topics include location and geo-targeting, the transformation of social change, the future of advertising, and taking digital media global – or local. More than 50 industry experts from Silicon Valley will participate, including Jason Krikorian, co-founder of Slingbox; Michael O’Donnell, CEO of Skytide; Adam Richardson, creative director of Frog Design; and David Blumberg, founder and managing director of Blumberg Capital.

Panelists also represent the Valley’s leading digital media firms, including Google, Facebook, Zynga, Groupon, Paypal, Yelp, Yahoo!, and more. >play Talks, new this year, will showcase three digital media visionaries, including Pascal Finette, director of Labs at Mozilla, sharing their future predictions in a TED-style format. Mr. Finette will discuss “Why Apps Stores are Broken and How to Fix Them” and Mozilla’s recent announcement of a prototype of an open app web ecosystem.

Interactive Technology:The conference will ask attendees to be dynamic participants with live polling, Internet-enabled SMART boards, an idea room for collaboration and reflection, and a master "mission control board" displaying it all in real time. Attendees can explore the Expo and interact with new technologies such as Microsoft’s Kinect before it hits the market. Expo Pitches will showcase exhibitors’ latest apps, games, social media innovations, and hardware in one to two minute “rocket pitches”.
