Women Playing Critical Role as Political Unrest Boils in Egypt

“Regarding the gender factor in these social movements, it is worth pointing out that women have been playing critical roles. The level of education explains the clearly important role that women have been playing in this Tunisian Revolution, which is being echoed in different countries, the most visible case being Egypt.

“Even if African and Middle Eastern women don’t always have easy access to public platforms to express their ideas and voice their opinions, even when their pictures are shown less and, thus, they may be less visible, in reality they have consistently constituted a formidable and determining force in the struggle against any system of oppression.”

--N’Dri Assie-Lumumba, a professor of Africana Studies at Cornell University.
