THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY REVOLUTION: WOMEN, WORK, AND SOCIAL CHANGE

Conference Feb. 11-13 at Oldest Women's College Inquires into the Myths and Realities of High Tech for Women; ebay.com Vice President Among Conference Speakers

SOUTH HADLEY, Massachusetts--A weekend conference in February at Mount Holyoke College, the oldest American institution of higher education for women, will tackle the role of women in the unfolding high-tech revolution. Panelists will examine the myths and realities of information technologies (IT) and their impact on our world.

According to one of the conference's organizers, Eva Paus, economics professor and co-director of Mount Holyoke's Center for Leadership, "Rapid advances in information technology have heightened uncertainty about how IT will transform our society. IT is said to hold out the promise of increased emancipation for women, minorities, and grassroots organizations and is projected to lead to radical changes in the workplace and markets. Yet, it also raises the specter of cyber terrorism and emotionally deprived Internet junkies and challenges current educational requirements and delivery. The conference seeks to explore all of these issues."

The conference begins on February 11 at 5:00 PM with registration and a welcome at 7:30. At 8:00, Robin Chemers Neustein '75, managing director of Goldman Sachs, and Mary Graham Davis '65, president of The Davis Consulting Group, will discuss "The Role of Information Technology in Our Professions and Lives." February 12 morning sessions will include lectures by Gloria Schuck of MIT; Jim Davis, vice president, ebay.com; and Anita Borg, researcher at the Xerox Research Center, CA, and founding director of the Institute for Women and Technology, an experimental research and development organization focusing on increasing the impact of women and technology and studying the positive impact of technology on the world's women.

Lectures will continue until 6:00, at which time a dinner honoring Jean E. Sammet '48, a pioneer in computing and computer languages, will follow. A final lecture by Arleen McGrath Heiss '70, consultant at Ernst &Young, will wrap up the evening. The conference then continues on February 13 from 9:30 to NOON and will close after lunch at 1:15 PM.

Founded in 1837, Mount Holyoke College is located in South Hadley, Massachusetts.
