Newswise — Outstanding scholars from three continents have been elected to serve as the first full-term officers of the World Education Research Association (WERA) to succeed an interim team. This association of 27 national, regional, and international specialty research associations aims to advance education research as a scientific and scholarly field world-wide to serve the public good.

The newly elected leadership is:

• President: Eva L. Baker, Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). For nearly three decades, Baker has been director of the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing at UCLA. Baker is a past president of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

• President-elect: Yin Cheong Cheng, Vice President (Research and Development) and Chair Professor of Leadership and Change of the Hong Kong Institute of Education. Cheng is serving as WERA’s Interim Vice President. He also is the immediate past president of the Asia-Pacific Educational Research Association.

• Vice President: Jo-Anne Reid, Professor of Education and Associate Dean, Teacher Education in the Faculty of Education, Charles Sturt University, Australia. She is President of the Australian Association for Research in Education, and has served as President of the Australian Teacher Education Association and of the New South Wales Teacher Education Council. • Secretary General: Felice J. Levine, Executive Director of the American Educational Research Association, Washington, D.C. Levine is serving as WERA’s Interim Secretary General. Previously, she was Executive Officer of the American Sociological Association and a program director at the National Science Foundation. She is a past president of the Law and Society Association.

Baker will follow Ingrid Gogolin who was elected Interim President of WERA in May 2009. Gogolin will also serve on the Executive Committee as Past President along with the newly elected officers. Gogolin is on the faculty of the School of Education, Psychology and Human Movement at the University of Hamburg in Germany, and is past president of the German Society of Educational Research and the European Educational Research Association.

WERA’s new officers assume their positions at the conclusion of the association’s second Council meeting, scheduled for May 5 and 6, 2010 in Denver, Colorado. The Council which governs WERA is composed of the officers who were elected by member associations and one representative from each of the 27 WERA member associations.

The 27 national, regional, and international specialty research associations that constitute WERA represent more than 60,000 education researchers around the world.

Established on April 18, 2009 in San Diego, California after three years of intensive planning, the World Education Research Association aims to undertake initiatives that are global in nature and transcend what any one association can accomplish in its own country, region, or area of specialization. Member associations are resolved to work together to address such issues as building capacity and interest in education research, advancing education research policies and practices, and promoting the use and application of education research around the world.
