Carnegie Mellon University's School of Music announces the Jeanne Baxtresser International Flute Master Class to be held June 21- 29, 2003. Baxtresser, the Vira I. Heinz Professor of Flute at Carnegie Mellon, will teach the master classes. She has held principal positions with three major orchestras, culminating with her tenure as solo flutist with the New York Philharmonic and is recognized internationally as a leading recording artist, author and teacher.
In addition, the class will present world-renowned guest artists: Mathieu Dufour, principal flute of the Chicago Symphony; Tim Hutchins, principal flute of the Montreal Symphony; Renee Siebert, flutist with the New York Philharmonic; and Marina Piccinini, winner of the Avery Fisher Prize and leading international flute soloist.
For one week this June approximately 100 class participants will be exposed to world-class teaching in a conservatory atmosphere while being surrounded and stimulated by a wide array of interdisciplinary classes and events that are unique to Carnegie Mellon.
The class has attracted many international students from around the world, from Canada to South Africa. Many musicians with different skill levels participate collectively.
"The enormous popularity of the flute covers all peoples of the world with an infinite variety of backgrounds. Exemplified by this class at Carnegie Mellon, you are likely to find a 12-year-old beginner sitting next to a 60-year-old doctor, sitting next to young professional flutist. Their shared affection for the flute gives them a powerful connection through a week of learning and performing together," said Baxtresser.
Previously, Baxtresser held two similar master classes at The Juilliard School in New York. Each class received an overwhelming response and attracted more than 100 flutists from 16 countries and 20 states in the United States. The master class has a tremendous impact on musicians from around the world and throughout Western Pennsylvania.
Wendy Webb Kumer, a 30-year member of the Pittsburgh Flute Club, said, "Bringing the Jeanne Baxtresser International Master Class to Pittsburgh will afford local flutists of all ages and levels the unique opportunity for concentrated study with the finest flutists from all over the world. The Pittsburgh Flute Club is especially excited for its youngest members to be exposed to the highest levels of musicianship from the guest artists and student performers. What they will be hearing and learning will be life-changing."
This summer's classes and lectures will also be presented by outstanding Carnegie Mellon faculty, which includes Alberto Almarza, and resident artists, Jennifer Conner of the Pittsburgh Symphony; Amy Porter, flute faculty, University of Michigan, formerly with the Atlanta Symphony; Anna Dina Schick, principal flute of the Royal Danish Opera Orchestra; Stephen Schultz, baroque flute specialist; and Adria Sternstein, principal flute of the Kennedy Center Opera Orchestra. Cordula Hacke from Germany and Collette Valentine from New York will be the lead pianists for the class.
Highlights of the class will include master classes on solo and orchestral repertoire, preparation for competitions and orchestral and conservatory auditions, and lectures on teaching, effective practicing, contemporary and baroque flute techniques, and special lectures for the amateur flutist. Other offerings include interdisciplinary workshops and lectures on stage presence, cognitive learning, and teaching and recording techniques to be taught by preeminent guest lecturers from Carnegie Mellon's School of Drama and the School of Music.
The class will finish with a Gala Concert June 27 and 28 at Kresge Recital Hall in the College of Fine Arts Building on Carnegie Mellon's campus; admission is $10 at the door.
