Newswise — It's said, "You’re only as old as you feel," and that certainly rang true for guests who attended the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) Geriatric Interest Group (GIG) Senior Prom, March 2.
While they weren’t battling teenage drama or fretting about who would be named queen, students in the GIG and residents from the local senior housing complex, Apostolic Towers, had a chance to be young again as they gathered together for a night of eating and dancing, much like the senior proms they remember from high school.
Outfitted in fancy dresses, sharp-looking suits, and corsages, the guests enjoyed a catered meal, good conversation, and laughter. After dinner, the group took the floor for some dancing, singing, and fellowship.
"It’s a fun social environment for all," says GIG President Sophia Pemberton. "Not only is the prom a great chance to be active, but it’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate older adults and deepen the school’s relationship with the community. The idea is to unite seniors and students, share stories, and learn from one another."
The Geriatric Interest Group is a student organization with a special interest in gerontological nursing and the older adult population. It is dedicated to enhancing knowledge about nursing roles and the science and practice of quality nursing care for adults. More than 100 undergraduate and graduate students make the GIG the largest of 21 groups at the School of Nursing.
