Yesterday, the Biden administration announced a plan to designate a priority offshore wind zone between Long Island and New Jersey as part of a larger effort to overhaul U.S. energy production and fight climate change.

Lara Skinner is the director of the Worker Institute’s Labor Leading on Climate Initiative and an expert on labor and employment issues related to sustainability, climate protection and clean energy. She says the Biden administration’s goal to build a large offshore wind industry demonstrates his commitment to tackling climate change and creating high-quality jobs for Americans.

Skinner says:

“President Biden’s offshore wind announcement yesterday is exactly what the U.S. needs to build a large offshore wind industry that delivers significant jobs, economic, climate and equity benefits to Americans. With this announcement, he set the big, bold target we need to scale up the industry - 30 GW by 2030.

“He also prioritized investments in port infrastructure and the supply chain, which will help the U.S. become a major manufacturing and jobs center for the world’s growing offshore wind industry.

“This announcement demonstrates President Biden’s commitment to tackling climate change, creating high-quality union jobs and supporting frontline communities of color that are most impacted by climate change.”
