APA INVITES MEDIA TO ATTEND
151ST ANNUAL MEETING IN TORONTO, CANADA

Note: All presentations are embargoed until the day of presentation.
Over 800 U.S. and international psychiatric experts will presenting the
latest research on the causes and treatments of mental illnesses at the
American Psychiatric Association's 151st Annual Meeting in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada, May 30-June 4, 1998, at the Toronto Convention Centre.

The six day conference will feature symposia, scientific and clinical
sessions, new research presentations, and lectures containing the most
up-to-date information on the issues facing psychiatry and people with
mental illnesses.

APA half-hour media briefings will be held throughout the week in the
APA Communications Center located on the lower level of the Toronto
Convention Centre.

Topics will include:

Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Monday, June 1 at 8:30 a.m.
Issues Facing the Canadian Psychiatrist, Monday, June 1 at 11:00 a.m.
Violence in Today?s World, Tuesday, June 2 at 8:30 a.m.
New Research Update, Tuesday, June 2 at 11:00 p.m.
Family Issues and Life Concerns, Wednesday, June 3 at 11:45 a.m.

All media briefings will feature a panel of expert presenters.

Presentations will be followed by question and answer sessions.

The APA Communications Center hours of operation will be Saturday, May 30th
12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, May 31st through Wednesday, June 3rd 8:00
a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Thursday, June 4th, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Media
registration for the meeting is complimentary. All Annual Meeting Sessions
will be open to registered media EXCEPT Continuing Medical Education (CME)
Courses, the Business Meeting, and Clinical and Continuous Case
Conferences. Preliminary programs are available by contacting Erin Murphy

and requesting materials.

Embargo Policy: All presentations are embargoed until the day of the
presentation unless a presenter and the chairperson of his/her session
agree to an earlier release. If a presenter and a chairperson agree to lift
an embargo, Public Affairs staff will post a notification in the Press Room
and on the electronic news and information web sites read by journalists to
ensure that no one outlet is granted an exclusive.
