Newswise — In 2017, Kansas total nonfarm employment is expected to increase by 12,572 jobs, which implies the employment growth rate is anticipated to be 0.9 percent.

The production sectors are projected to expand 0.1 percent in Kansas, adding 179 jobs in 2017.

Trade, transportation and utilities sector employment is expected to grow 0.6 percent, adding approximately 1,600 new jobs.

The service sectors are anticipated to be the fastest growing segment of the Kansas economy in 2017, adding over 10,000 jobs for 1.6 percent employment growth.

The government sector is expected to remain approximately flat in 2017, adding less than 100 jobs.

National employment increased by 1.7 percent in the past 12 months, while Kansas employment has declined by 0.6 percent over the same period, a decrease of approximately 7,700 jobs.

"Kansas economic growth will remain muted until the global economy picks up," comments Jeremy Hill, director of the Center for Economic Development and Business Research at Wichita State.
