Newswise — MAYWOOD, Ill. -- The 23rd Annual Ruth K. Palmer Research Symposium will bring the latest nursing research to area health-care professionals. This event will take place from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. , Saturday, April 9, at Loyola University Health System’s John & Herta Cuneo Center, Tobin Hall, 2160 S. First Ave., in Maywood.
Keynote speaker Frances Marcus Lewis, RN, MN, PhD, FAAN, will present “Reframing Cancer as a Family’s Experience, Not a Patient’s Disease: An Analysis of the Evidence and Implications for Needed Studies and Services.” Dr. Marcus Lewis is the Virginia & Prentice Bloedel Professor at University of Washington. She also is an affiliate of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and an adjunct professor at University of Pennsylvania.
"Health-care providers must be mindful of how a cancer diagnosis impacts the entire family,” said Vicki A. Keough, PhD, RN-BC, ACNP, dean, Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. “Dr. Marcus Lewis’ presentation will shed light on this aspect of patient care and explore approaches to support the entire family through this process.”
Dr. Marcus Lewis will join a respected panel of speakers. The goal of their presentations will be to: identify multidisciplinary approaches of framing the impact of an individual’s illness within a family; explore evidence that informs health-care providers in addressing the needs of children and families in distress; and describe the dynamic balance between the environment and health.
Nurses, nurse practitioners, educators, administrators, health-care professionals and students are welcome to attend the symposium presentations. Poster sessions also will be available throughout the day.
Loyola University Health System is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Illinois Nurse's Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This activity will offer six contact hours for nursing. The symposium was established from the Ruth K. Palmer Memorial Endowment, a gift of dean emeritus Gladys Kiniery in memory of her beloved sister.
"The late Gladys Kiniery and her sister Ruth K. Palmer have been instrumental in supporting research and knowledge-sharing," Dean Keough said. "We look forward to carrying on their legacy through the annual symposium and its significant contributions to health care."
