Embargo date: 5:00 p.m EST, 26 June 2000

IEEE Spectrum Associate Editor Samuel K. Moore describes a newly developed microcamera that is swallowed as a pill, to provide wireless images of the inside of the intestine. A substitute for the endoscope, a flexible optical-fiber device that must be inserted through the mouth or anus, the pill-encapsulated camera was invented by an Israeli company, Given Imaging Ltd.
