Newswise — To ensure child safety this Halloween, psychologist David Schwebel, Ph.D., director of the UAB Youth Safety Lab, offers the following tips: "Children age 10 and under should be accompanied by an adult while trick-or-treating, and older children also benefit greatly from supervision. To protect older children who aren't accompanied by an adult, parents should know their child's route, know when they will return home and have them to carry a cell phone so they can contact an adult in an emergency. Discourage children from carrying costume accessories like toy guns that could be mistaken for a real gun. Homeowners who plan to hand out candy should keep pets away since they can be frightened by costumes and scare children."
