Newswise — The 2014 AACI Public Service Awards will be presented at AACI’s annual meeting in Chicago, during a luncheon October 27. This year, AACI will honor U.S. Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Representative Michael McCaul (R-TX) for their commitment to advancing cancer research.

Each year AACI recognizes individuals who work to advance cancer research and who are unwavering in their support of programs that ease cancer’s burden on Americans. Senate Majority Whip Durbin has served as a member of the Senate Cancer Coalition and is a dedicated advocate for prevention, concentrating much of his career on legislative efforts to curb tobacco use. Senator Durbin has remained committed to requesting adequate funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) throughout his tenure in Congress.

Representative McCaul is a co-chair and founder of the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus and as a member of the House Cancer Caucus. He has worked tirelessly to advance the childhood cancer agenda on Capitol Hill and has developed strong relationships with cancer centers in his home state of Texas and with the cancer community at large.

Barbara Duffy Stewart, executive director of AACI, said of the awardees, “At a time when funding for the NIH and NCI is stagnant, it is imperative that we commend the champions working on behalf of cancer centers in Washington. Both Senator Durbin and Representative McCaul are determined and steadfast in their support for biomedical research. We look forward to thanking them for their leadership.”

AACI and the Cancer Center Administrators Forum (CCAF) jointly formulated the program for the 2014 AACI/CCAF Annual Meeting. The meeting will be held at the Westin Chicago River North, October 26 - 28. More information on the meeting, including the program and electronic registration is available on the AACI website.
